Kitchen Cabinets
Wood is the most popular material used for kitchen cabinets. There are a wide variety of materials that kitchen cabinets can be made of, and also a wide variety of woods to consider when doing a kitchen remodeling project. Take a look at the different looks and styles:
Types of Woods
  • Cherry - Extremely durable and elegant.
  • Pine - A softer wood with a straight grain.
  • Oak -  More casual look and very durable.
  • Maple - The most popular choice of wood and finishes very well. Also very durable.
  • Hickory - Strong, heavy and bleaches very well.
  • Birch -  Cream colored, usually found in stock cabinetry.
  • Mahogany - Very durable hardwood and elegant.
Other materials used for kitchen cabinets
  • Laminate - Almost unlimited amount of colors; easy to clean.
  • Stainless Steel -  Sleek and cleanable without harsh chemicals.
  • Thermofoil -  Numerous styles and generally lower cost.
Counter tops
Granite is the most popular stone when it comes to kitchen remodeling because of it's natural beauty. Take a look at the pros and cons of some other materials:
  • Granite - Pros: Extremely Durable; Eye Appealing; Hot items including pots can be placed directly on it; Cons: More expensive than other options, Must be sealed.
  • Laminate - Pros: Inexpensive; Unlimited looks and colors. Cons: Cannot cut on it; Hard to repair; Hot items and water can damage the material.
  • Wood - Pros: Great for chopping; Can cut on it; Easy to repair. Cons: Needs to be re-oiled periodically; Can be water damaged; Visible knife marks.
  • Quartz - Pros: Non-porous; Extremely Durable; Scratch Resistant; Nearly stain-proof. Cons: Can get pricey.
  • Stainless Steel - Pros: Easy to clean, Won't stain, Non-porous. Cons: Pricey; Easy to dent; Shows scratches and fingerprints.
  • Solid Surface - Pros: Easily repairable; Wide variety of colors and patterns; Nearly stain-proof. Cons: Cannot cut on it; Cannot put hot pots or pans on it.

Flooring
When designing your kitchen, the flooring is going to play a pivotal role. There are many factors in picking the type of flooring that you need for your lifestyle. Take a look at the different options available:
  • Hardwood -  Pros: Durable; Variety of looks. Cons: Water causes warping; Needs special coating; Hard to prevent stains.
  • Vinyl - Pros: Resilient; Easy maintenance; Variety of looks; Good for pets Cons: Could peel, Not good for radiant heat.
  • Laminate -  Pros: Easy maintenance; Less costly; Look of wood. Cons: Not good for long periods of standing; Susceptible to water damage.
  • Linoleum - Pros: Environmentally friendly; Easy to prevent stains; Good for pets.  Cons: Not too many options; Less durable.
  • Ceramic - Pros: Very Durable; Wide variety of styles; Easy to maintain. Cons: Hard on the feet.
  • Stone - Pros: Granite, Slate and Marble are extremely durable; Eye appealing. Cons: Cold and hard on the feet; Grout can show stains.
Storage
Storage is critical when remodeling your kitchen. People aren't looking for huge homes anymore, which means the kitchen's aren't as grande as they used to be. Think style and space when it comes to kitchen storage. There are many unique and new ideas when it comes to storage in the modern kitchen. Here are some options for optimizing storage in your kitchen:
  • Shelving - Roll out shelves, Swing shelves, Lazy Susans.
  • Drawers - Spice drawers; Cutlery compartments; Utensil dividers. Using drawers in the base cabinets is a great idea.
  • Islands - Place the sink or cook top on the island, freeing up space.
  • Pantries - Just like regular shelving, pantries can be built to your specifications: Roll out pantry; Pull out pantry; Fold out pantry; Fixed shelves pantry.
  • Doors -  Door mounted bins or spice racks.
